8 Weeks, by Bethany Lopez

8 Weeks (Time for Love, #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"8 Weeks" is a sweet & romantic story! As described in the synopsis, this is the story of 2 high school sweethearts who are torn apart by a one-night Vegas indiscretion after 6 years of marriage. Shelly is devastated and is ready to give up on her marriage whereas Cal is desperate to make amends and win back Shelly's love and trust. Shelly agrees to give Cal 8 weeks before she makes her ultimate decision as to their future. This contemporary new adult romance is a stand alone book but it is part of the "Time for Love" series (other books in the series will feature the secondary characters of this book).

At first I thought this story would be about forgiveness, trust & courtship but it ended up being a tale about really knowing your other half and not taking them for granted. Moral of the story: Do you really truly know the person who you've been married to for years or do you take them for granted and just coast along on autopilot?

The story is told from both Shelly and Cal's point of view, alternately. There is descriptive sexual content but it is not the main premise of the book. In fact, the sexual content is fairly subdued, which suits me just fine. The book is more about the romance & emotional turmoil the characters are going through. At first I thought the 8 dates would end up being a bit repetitive but, with every date, a lesson is learned by both Cal and Shelly. The book had a nice flow to it.

Characters: Cal impressed me a lot. His character evolves tremendously from start to finish. Shelly's character takes more time to evolve because she is hit with such a tremendous shock at first and she has to shake off the anger and confusion first. Having been together for so long, they have the same friends and they play a big part in the story. Each character is very distinct. The characters are in their mid-twenties.

Synopsis:

Is eight weeks enough time to earn back the love of someone you've betrayed...the only one you've ever loved?

Shelly has been in love with Cal since they started dating in eleventh grade. Despite everyone saying that the odds were against them, they got married after graduation and built a life together. Now, six years later, she is faced with the ultimate betrayal. Devastated, her first instinct is to call it quits…

After a drunken binge at his best friends’ bachelor party, Cal betrays the one person who has always been there for him, his wife, Shelly. Terrified and realizing she might divorce him, Cal must come up with a way to prove to her that his love is true…

Cal asks Shelly for eight weeks. Eight weeks to convince her that their marriage is worth the fight. Will Shelly be able to trust him again, or will their marriage end the way many others do when faced with opposition… In divorce?

8 Weeks is book 1 in the Time for Love series, but can be read as a stand alone.

The Proposition 3, by H.M Ward

For inquiries about release dates: H.M. Ward never sets release dates for her serials. She usually gives us fans a general idea of when a book will be released a week or so prior to it's release on her Facebook page. A good clue is when she opens up ARC requests on her Facebook page. Normally, once the ARC requests open up, you can expect the book to be released a week or 2 later, but this is very variable.

According to a comment made by the author on her Facebook page, "The Proposition 3" should be available for purchase as of Tuesday, March 25th, 2014 around midnight.

The Proposition 3: The Ferro Family (The Proposition, #3)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Emotional, Intense and Oh So Sexy! A great choice if you're looking to read a series from an author capable of delivering great quality material consistently.

The Proposition 3... book 3 of 5. The middle book. Normally a middle of the series book is where everything goes wrong for the main characters and all hope is lost. That would be true for The Proposition 3 except that things have being going wrong for ALL the characters since the very first book. This is a very dramatic series with a lot of intense and emotional aspects to it. Consistently fantastic, H.M. Ward delivers yet another book that reaches into you and grabs hold of your feelings. When you have physical reactions to a book (shivers, heart beating faster, lump in the throat), you know you're reading something great. To be read in one sitting, but then again, the story is so gripping, never stopping, that you wouldn't be able to find a good place to put it down anyway. It took me about 2.5 hours to read it.

This book has nice a mix of action, intrigue, humour, drama, romance, bondage erotica, happiness, sorrow, violence, drugs, prostitution & blackmail... Oh, and lots of gorgeous Ferro men too! The Proposition is meant to be read as a whole series. You must start with number 1 and work your way up to number 5.

Characters: I love all of H.M. Ward's characters and I love the way she has them evolve so brilliantly, for better of for worse. What surprised me in number 3, was how Maggie (a secondary character) became so important in the storyline. I love Maggie and was glad to see a lot more of her.

This is a Ferro Family series about Bryan Ferro (the Ferro cousin). Other Ferro Family titles are Damaged (Peter Ferro) & Stripped (Jonathan Ferro) and The Arrangement (Sean Ferro). You don't have to read the other Ferro Family books if you want to get into The Proposition but if you like H.M. Ward's books, you may want to read all of them. The Ferro Family books are contemporary "new adult" romance stories involving characters mostly in their 20's (college aged women & slightly older men).

Reading order: Although each series is stand alone & can be read in any order, if you are planning on reading all of the Ferro Family books, I recommend reading them in the order they were published to avoid any spoilers from one series to the next since they cross-over at multiple points in the timeline.

Books in order of publication date:
The Arrangement 1-4
Damaged 1
The Arrangement 5-7
Damaged 2
The Arrangement 8-9
Stripped
The Arrangement 10-11
The Proposition 1
The Arrangement 12
The Proposition 2
The Arrangement 13-14
The Proposition 3

H.M. Ward's serials:
Serials are shorter books (approximately 130 pages in print: 1/4 to 1/3 of a full-length novel) that come out more frequently than full-length novels (about 1 per month). They start off abruptly from where the previous book ended and end with a cliffhanger,  often leaving the reader begging for the next volume. Being shorter books, serials don't recap events that occur in previous volumes, so it's best to start off with book 1. I read at an average speed and each volume takes me about 1 to 2 hours to read.

City of Ashes, by Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If there was a way to put 6 stars, I would! I am devouring the entire series (this is book 2 of 6)! This is my 5th book by Cassandra Clare (Infernal Devices 1,2,3 & Mortal Instrument 1,2) and, I must say, she is consistent and true to her writing style, which I LOVE. I don't want to sound repetitive from one "Shadowhunter" review to the next but Clare knows how to write a perfect balance of action, suspense, romance, angst, humour, mystery and fantasy. I always feel very strong emotions while reading Clare's books. In "City of Ashes", I laughed, cringed, bit my nails, lost sleep & shed a tear. Clare does romantic tension very well as well as witty banter and cocky comebacks. She is a powerful author who delivers consistently. A gripping series about demons, warlocks, vampires and werewolves set in current day New York City with characters mostly between the ages of 16 and 18.

Audience / themes / content / info for parents:
Written for a teen/young adult audience, the entire Shadowhunter collection of books are addictive & gripping for adults as well. Parents: Although there is no descriptive sexual content, there is slight mention of sex and the reader feels the characters' emotional pull & desires during the more romantic parts and the subject of sexual identity and orientation is addressed beautifully. Being an action/adventure book set in a paranormal world of demons, vampires and werewolves, expect violence, blood & guts. I may wait for my pre-teen boy to be around the age of 13 or 14 before I introduce him to the wonderful world of Cassandra Clare's books.

Shadowhunter books:
Other "Shadowhunter" series are "The Infernal Devices" (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, Clockwork Princess), "The Bane Chronicles" (10 short stories about Magnus Bane) and "The Dark Artifices" (in 2015).

Synopsis:

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go -- especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh, my! What a wonderful story & an emotional adventure! I'm in love: with the characters, with the story & with the whole world of Shadowhunters created by Cassandra Clare. This is the kind of book that has me losing sleep because it is really hard to put down. There is never a good spot to close the book. It is non-stop and gripping. The author writes the perfect balance of everything I love in a paranormal story: action, tension, suspense, unexpected turn of event, mystery, LOVE, angst, humour, sarcasm, friendship, magic, FRUSTRATION... I am truly addicted to this series. Written for younger readers, it is also a GREAT read for adults (like me). It had me laughing, cringing, yelling, swooning, sighing & grabbing the sequel immediately after reading the last page. I'm a bit of a romance junkie and Cassandra Clare knows how to twist the romantic guts out of her readers.

"City of Bones" is the 1st book of 6 in "The Mortal Instruments" (TMI) series (see more info on other Shadowhunter titles below). Teen paranormal story about angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks & faeries, set in today's New York City. The main characters are teenagers (15 and up) and they are all absolutely wonderful. The witty banter and snarky remarks made me laugh. So many memorable quotes!!!

Told in the 3rd person, mostly explaining Clary's point of view but there are a couple passages from various characters' point of view scattered throughout the book.

Other books in Cassandra Clare's world of Shadowhunters:
- "The Infernal Devices" (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince & Clockwork Princess): Set in Victorian England. Some characters present in TMI are also present in TID.
- "The Bane Chronicles": 10 short stories about Magnus Bane, sold as individual ebooks, soon to be released as a collection in print format.
- "The Dark Artifices": due for release in 2015. Set in present time, after the events of TMI, with a California backdrop.

Synopsis:
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Wallbanger, by Alice Clayton

Wallbanger (Cocktail, #1)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

You know a book is worth 5 stars when the characters & their story sticks with you for days after you've finished reading. It has been 5 days since I finished reading "Wallbanger" and I'm still laughing and swooning over it! I'm tempted to go back and read it again, soon! When I heard that Alice Clayton, the author, is planning on releasing more books with these characters (the Cocktail series), I was actually giddy (I did a happy dance!). If you don't want to get into a series, this book could EASILY be read as a stand alone, since the ending is an actual ending (no cliffhangers).

A romantic, funny, sometimes erotic, contemporary tale of 2 neighbours, in their mid-to-late 20's, who meet under unusual circumstances. Dislike turns to friendship, turns to infatuation, turns to... *sigh* I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I was soooo pleasantly surprised by the wit and the quality of the writing. I literally laughed out loud many times and had a severe case of the "hot-and-bothered" repeatedly. Part of the strength of this book lies in it's balance: it is hilarious but also very smart, it is romantic but not soppy, it is erotic but not an orgy sex-fest. I love romantic tension in a book and there is more than enough to go around in "Wallbanger". So deliciously frustrating at times!

The characters, main and secondary, are loveable and you can't help but become attached to them. I did, however, get confused repeatedly with the names of the 4 friends (Caroline's two girl friends and Simon's two guy friends) which made their interactions a bit confusing at times. I'm hoping to see more from the secondary characters in the sequels.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good laugh, smart characters, a good best-friend-turns-love story & hot and sexy love making.

It is a full-length novel (385 pages in print format) that could be read as a stand alone (no cliffhanger ending). Told in the first person, mostly from Caroline's point of view but there are a couple little parts from various characters's point of view too. Contains course language, mature and sexually explicit content.

Synopsis:
Caroline Reynolds has a fantastic new apartment in San Francisco, a Kitchen Aid mixer to die for, and no O (and we’re not talking Oprah here, folks). She has a flourishing design career, an office overlooking the bay, a killer zucchini bread recipe, and no O. She has Clive (the best cat ever), great friends, a great rack, and no O. Adding insult to O-less, she also has an oversexed neighbor with the loudest late-night wallbanging she’s ever heard. Every moan, spank, and—was that a meow?—punctuates the fact that not only is she losing sleep, she still has—yep, you guessed it—no O. Enter Simon Parker. When the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. Their late-night hallway encounter has…well…mixed results. Because with walls this thin, the tension’s gonna be thick. A delicious mix of silly and steamy, this is an irresistible tale of exasperation at first sight.

Take a Chance, by Abbi Glines

THIS BOOK CONTAINS EXPLICIT SEXUAL CONTENT AND COURSE LANGUAGE (18+)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Info on the series:
This is book 1 of 2 in the "Chance" series. The "Chance" books are part of Abbi Glines' "Rosemary Beach" collection. Other books from Rosemary Beach are the 3 (soon to be 4) "Too Far" (Rush and Blaire) books and the 2 "Perfection" (Woods and Della) books. Each series tells the tale of a different couple and could be read separately. If you wish to read them all, I suggest starting with "Too Far", then "Perfection", then "Chance". The various series are linked to each other mainly through the male characters, who are all part of the same group of friends. Most characters appear in all the books. These are contemporary new adult romance with explicit sexual content (18+). The characters are mostly in their 20's.

My review:
Since Grant was one of my favorite characters from the very first chapter of the 1st Rosemary Beach book (Fallen Too Far), my expectations for this book were really high. I didn't get the chills, shivers and tears I was expecting (I cried so much with Fallen Too Far) but I enjoyed the book nonetheless. I love Grant. He oozes sexiness and he's cocky yet über friendly to everyone. Following the events of "Simple Perfection", Grant is shaken up and has issues that he needs to work through. Harlow, as with all Rosemary Beach girlfriends so far, is young, sweet and innocent and has issues of her own that prevent her from falling freely for Grant's charms. The first half of the book was a bit predictable, repetitive and lagging (I had no trouble putting it down) but the end was gripping and surprising (I had a lump in my throat towards the end). As with most Abbi Glines books, "Take a Chance" is a sexy read and contains explicit content that can make you blush. The story is told in the 1st person, alternating between Harlow and Grant's point of view. Having reached the end of "Take a Chance", I am looking forward to reading the sequel. This book continues setting up the story for Bethy and Tripp for their eventual book(s). It took me 7 hours to read "Take a Chance".

Kiro, Harlow's father and lead signer of the world famous group "Slacker Demon", surprised me so much! Oh. My. Gosh! He tugged on my heartstrings! This is the kind of unpredictability that I like in a book.

Synopsis:

When Harlow Manning's rocker father goes on tour, he sends her to Rosemary Beach, Florida, to live with her half-sister, Nan. The problem: Nan despises her. Harlow has to keep her head down if she wants to get through the next nine months, which seems easy enough. Until gorgeous Grant Carter walks out of Nan's room in nothing but his boxer briefs.

Grant made a huge mistake getting involved with a girl with venom in her veins. He'd known about Nan's reputation, but still he couldn't resist her. Nothing makes him regret the fling more than meeting Harlow, who sends his pulse racing. Yet Harlow wants nothing to do with a guy who could fall for her wicked half-sister even if there are no strings between Grant and Nan. Grant is desperate to redeem himself in Harlow's eyes, but did he ruin his chances before he even met her?

Causal Enchantment, by K.A. Tucker

A couple days ago, I posted my review for book 4 (Anomaly) of the "Causal Enchantment" series as part of a blog tour for the book's release. Here is my complete review for the "Causal Enchantment" series by K.A. Tucker. Although book 1 (Anathema) only got a 3 star rating, the rest of the series got a well deserved 4 stars (read on and see why).

Anathema (Causal Enchantment, #1)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

For the most part, this book is good, with room for improvement (which you get in the sequels). It's a modern day vampire teen love story with lots of intrigue & plot twists. With a fairly simple writing style, this series is appropriate and accessible to younger readers yet entertaining enough for adult readers. Once I started reading, I had trouble putting the book down. The romance is also good. I got shivers during certain "Caden and Eve" moments.

My issues with this book (note: most are addressed & resolved in the sequels & are no longer issues)(SAFE REVIEW, NO SPOILERS): The events at the start of the story happened too fast for my taste. I needed a couple more days or weeks in the characters' lives to make the events seem more probable & realistic. Ratheus: There are too many similarities with Earth and it bugged me somewhat (language, expressions, surroundings, etc.). Evangeline: I like strong willed & smart female characters but Evie is more on the fragile & weak side, however, she is very smart and her reasoning is sound.

Technical stuff: Book 1 of 4. Contemporary teen paranormal romance (vampires & witches). Told in the first person from Eve's point of view. It took me 10 hours to read.

Asylum (Causal Enchantment, #2)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 2 of 4 in the Causal Enchantment series (this is a teen / young adult series).

I must say, this volume had my complete and undivided attention! It was hard to put down. The series gets better with every volume, which is quite rare in a series. It was packed with all the stuff I love from a young adult paranormal romance: action, lies, deceit, evil characters, danger, beautiful vampires, unexpected friendships, mystery, mythical creatures, magic, ... For most of the book, Caden & Evangeline are appart but the romantic tension is still very strong and both characters are very present throughout the entire story. I had issues with the story line in book 1 (Anathema) but those issues were addressed & explained in book 2 and made more sense.

I was pleasantly surprised with the dual point of view! It was not what I was expecting at all! Half from Evangeline's point of view, half from Sophie's (I was expecting Caden), alternating from one chapter to the next. I LOVE Sophie!!! She is a wonderful character. This made the reading experience so entertaining and I was glad not to have Caden's point of view because it keeps you wondering about his true intentions and feelings! Evangeline is still very naïve and on the weaker side (which tends to put me off a bit) but she's slowly coming into her own, making important decisions (though not always thinking about the implications beforehand). She has trouble doing as she is told, which gets her into trouble. Her character is definitely evolving.

The story line gets twisted more and more as lies upon lies are being piled up from one character to another. The only 2 characters we can trust are Sophie and Evangeline, since we are in their heads and read their thoughts.

Technical stuff: 8 hours to read. Young adult paranormal romance set in a contemporary setting.

Allegiance (Causal Enchantment, #3)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Part 3 of 4 in the Causal Enchantment series. Young adult paranormal romance novels about vampires, witches and greater powers that be. Loaded with action, plots, deceit & strategy, the books get better and better as the series progresses. After the magical altercation with a tribe in book 2, 18 year old Evangeline is changing and nobody knows what to make of it. She has become somewhat unique and a mystery and possibly lethal. New friendships are established, allegiances are pledged and hurtful truths are revealed. Now that Evangeline has deep secrets of her own, she battles with her conscience, wondering what is the right thing to do and what the cost will be. It seems everyone is keeping secrets and it's slowly eating away at them.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Allegiance". Well written, it was gripping and hard to put down. With non stop action, the story and the plot was well thought out. The romance between Caden and Evangeline is sweet, even though they have their ups and downs (I especially enjoyed their romance because they had ups and downs).

Told both from Sophie and Evangeline's point of view. Sophie is just as wonderful as before. Powerful and loving, she is an amazing character to follow, showing a vulnerable side that wasn't apparent in the first part of the series. Evangeline is still struggling with her inner and outer weaknesses. She is still insecure and weak but she's trying to find her way. Caden is still just as sexy and swoony. He even shows an angry side to him that makes his character all the more interesting.

It took me 11.5 hours to read "Allegiance". Parental guidance: Contains violence, death and reference to sexuality (no descriptive content).

Anomaly (Causal Enchantment, #4)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 4th and last book in the Causal Enchantments series by K.A. Tucker. It is a wonderful young adult paranormal romance series about vampires in a contemporary setting dealing with end-of-world issues. There are twists and turns, more lies and revelations... you constantly wonder where the story is taking you and how all the problems will be resolved. Book 4 (Anomaly), was no exception. I really enjoyed it!

The series just got better and better with every book. It was hard to put down at times. I would classify this series in my "very entertaining & enjoyable" reads. It had all the ingredients that I like in a young adult paranormal romance: vampires, romantic tension, lies, deceit, magic, action, suspense, death, unexpected friendships, unpredictability... My constant main concern throughout the series had to do with Evangeline's character and how weak and naïve she was. In Anomaly, Evie evolves into a strong, confident young woman who takes charge of difficult situations. She stands up & defends her decisions, even if the outcomes aren't quite the ones she expected. Two thumbs up for Evangeline! As with books 2 & 3, book 4 is told from both Evie and Sophie's point of view. I've loved Sophie from the get-go and the turn of events in her character's story surprised me. She shows a vulnerable side of herself that I didn't know she had. None of the characters are perfect and that's what I love about them.

Book 4 has a bit more combat-strategy feel to it but it is not so overpowering that it takes over the story. The general feel of the story is true to the rest of the series.

As for the romance between Evie and Caden, it gave me shivers at times! They are such a cute couple! There could have been a bit more romance but, then again, when you're trying to save humanity, there may not be time for lovey-dovey stuff!!!

My only little minor concern: the ending may have been just a little too perfect for some readers. Personally, I like a happy ending & was quite satisfied but I can guess that some people may be cringing at the perfectness of the situation at the end.

Technical stuff: Young adult paranormal romance (parental guidance: violence, death, blood, sexual reference but no explicitly descriptive sexual content). It took me 7.5 hours to read it.

Revenge 2, by J.J. Knight

*** Edit to my original review: I don't like blogging about average to bad reviews but since I have already posted reviews for the 2 first books, I feel it's my responsibility as a reviewer to let the potential reader know what to expect for the remainder of the series. I have finished the series of 5 volumes. Although I gave 4 star ratings to volumes 1 and 2, it was not the case for volumes 3 - 5, unfortunately. I had really high hopes for this series, as it started off strong but the quality of the writing, character evolution and storyline lacked as the series progressed. It almost felt rushed, as if the author was writing on a deadline to get the books out at a faster rate. I, for one, prefer waiting just a little bit longer in order to have better quality content. As for the main characters, Dylan remained a very interesting character to read about but Jess was harder for me to like. Her character evolved only in the last part of the last book. ***

Synopsis:
Dylan Wolf is more than just a street musician with a body and voice to die for.
He holds the key to Jess Rivera's future, and her heart.

Revenge 2 (Revenge, #2)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was looking forward to reading book 2 to better evaluate the quality of the series (most series tend to fizzle out after a strong book 1). I was pleasantly surprised to see that book 2 kept up with the momentum of book 1. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Revenge 2". It's a good sequel to the first book. Lots of mysterious twists and turns, a hot and sexy scene that'll make your insides melt, interesting & unexpected character developments. I was entertained the entire time.

Dylan is sexy, twisted, manipulative & a smooth talker. I love his character. I'm curious to see how Jessie's character will evolve because she's very gullible at the moment. I hope that she becomes more confident & learns to stiffen her backbone. Dylan mistreats & manipulates her, her boss takes advantage of her, yet she stays in those situations knowingly. She forgives & forgets easily.

As is the trend in serial novellas, book 1 ended in a cliffhanger & book 2 picks up where book 1 left off & ends with another cliffhanger, where the story takes a drastic turn. I compare this series to H.M. Ward's serials in it's structure, storyline & turn of events. There is slight repetitiveness in the writing (when the author likes an expression, she uses it repeatedly) but the overall quality of the writing is good.

Technical stuff: Book 2 of 5. Ends in a cliffhanger. Told in the first person from Jessie's point of view. Contemporary romance novella with sexually explicit content. It took me 2.5 hours to read this book (I was constantly interrupted during my reading, which slowed me down a bit).
